- What a thrilling story from World War II. We should all read more about this struggle to help us appreciate our great nation, great people, and great heritage. The Sterling series of books is really outstanding.

- This book provides an excellent account of the mass Allied escape from the German Stalag Luft III prison camp in March of 1944. It is well researched, professionally written, entertaining, and informative. The included photos and diagrams complement the text nicely. Readers who enjoyed Paul Brickhill's "The Great Escape" will be pleased with the additional information about that historic event which is included in this similarly-titled story. However, the book does contain a few discrepancies. Chief among these is its inconsistent title the cover reads "The Great Escape, Tunnel to Freedom", while the main title page shows "The Great Escape, The Longest Tunnel." Within the text, author Meserole states that the Allied D-Day invasion of Normandy in June 1944 caught the Germans by surprise. However, the thousands of Allied casualties on the bloody Normandy beaches that day prove otherwise. The author also says that the unconditional surrender of Germany in May 1945 marked the end of World War II; in fact, it marked only the end of the European side of that conflict. The war in the Pacific theater continued until August. Finally, the book contains only one undetailed map showing the general layout of the Allied escape routes out of Germany. Additional maps depicting the actual routes taken by The Great Escape's participants (especially the three who made it all the way home) would have been very helpful. Despite these minor discrepancies, this reviewer highly recommends "The Great Escape, Tunnel to Freedom/The Longest Tunnel" to anyone with an interest in one of the most ingenious and intriguing tunnel escapes in history.
- My 13-year-old son picked this book to read for summer reading. He is more-or-less a non-reader and only likes non-fiction books when he does read. He loved this book and suggested that I read it when he finished. I, too, thought it was a great book.
Easy to read and tells a great WWII story.
You can follow this up with watching the movie The Great Escape. There is also a PBS documentary on the story. - My son is 11 years old and is a military history fanatic. He loved this book! Couldn't put it down. Wants me to order more books from this series.
