- I read this book from the perspective of a former university vice president, now retired, who has gone through the wars over many managerial innovations, from HBO through TQI and what have you. What I like about Fullan's approach is that it makes sense. It offers the chance to actually realize the carefully drawn up plans we time after time lay down in writing, only to find how differently they played out in action.
You still need written plans, and ways to assess them, plan but you mustn’t confuse the words on paper (or electronic medium) with what actually happens when human beings start to roll out what's contained on the paper sheets. A manager can control what he does with his or her own time, but the minute responsibilities stretch beyond the reach of one’s fingers, eyes and ears, other people are key to the equation. That means you have to learn how to read them as well as make it possible for them to read you. As Fullan says, managing, when it’s done right, is as much a process of educating (and thus recruiting) as of supervising. Fullan writes good prose compactly, a blessing after the hyperbolic style of many popular books on management and the deadly boring style of other authors. This book offers good advice in an attractive package. Fullan (prof. emeritus, Univ. of Toronto Leading in a Culture of Change, and numerous others) knows what he’s writing about. - "Nuance Why Some Leaders Succeed and Others Fail" by Michael Fullan opens with a very strong case of why nuance is needed and I liked that. He makes good points here and there as well. I especially liked the chapter on accountability. The text is readable and mostly easy to follow. I did felt the number of case examples was a bit high so it felt like it got a bit cluttered on the points but overall, I liked this book on an increasingly under-appreciated topic.
