Ready to Paint in 30 Minutes Street Scenes in Watercolour Grahame Booth 9781782214151 Books Reviews

  • I have several in the Ready to Paint Watercolour series, but right now the Street Scenes is my favorite! The author explains the techniques clearly and provides pictures of each step. **One exception when doing each of the projects be sure to note where the white space is reserved by looking at the photos carefully - once you apply paint it is too late!
  • Perfect for a painter who can't draw! Thank you for making this kind of product available for people like me.
  • Clear exercises
  • I was given this book as a gift (per my request) and I love it! I'm new to watercolor, having dabbled first in sketching and finding my way into the "urban sketching" phenomenon. Booth's style is a perfect fit for that with a "loose" approach that captures the energy and light of street scenes - exactly what I wanted. Although they are small thumbnail photos, each mini-project in the book includes a reference photo which I think is helpful in developing an eye for the kind of detail to keep and what to let go of when street sketching.

Another reviewer commented that this style is "sloppy" and I'd like to address that. I don't find this "sloppy" at all - it's LOOSE. If you are looking for realism, then look for another book. The entire Search Press "ready to paint in 30 minutes" series - including this book - consists of postcard (4" x 6") small painting projects, each of which is DESIGNED to be completed in about a half hour. I find these books helpful as a beginner for developing skills in discrete projects and they fit into my goal to try to draw and paint something small each day because I definitely notice more progress in my skills with regular practices. If your life is busy, this is a great series (especially when at the end of the day you can't quite come up with your own idea for something to sketch/paint or don't have the time or inclination to head out the door to go drawing!).

Booth uses a very limited palette (more limited than other books in the series) which may also be helpful for someone starting out - only 5 watercolors and one tube of white gouache to do all but one painting in the book! Do note that this series (and publisher for that matter) reference Winsor Newton paints and several of these colors are unique blends to WN so if you are striving to achieve the exact look of the sample paintings, pick up WN colors, especially for Burnt Sienna, Cadmium Yellow Hue (a medium cadmium yellow hue), and the Quin Gold blend.

    Full pigment/paint info

    Ultramarine (PB29)
Winsor Red (PR254) (in most other brands, this is known as pyrrol red)
    Burnt Sienna (PR101)
Cadmium Yellow (Hue) (PY35 + PO20) - the original cadmium yellow is a toxic heavy metal, so look for a cadmium yellow HUE - manufacturers vary quite a bit in the pigments they use to achieve this
Quinacridone Gold (Hue) (PR206, PV19, PY150) - the original PO49 which was the quin gold pigment used for car paint is no longer available - manufacturers have different blends to achieve the color with multiple pigments now
    White Gouache

Quinacridone Magenta (this is used in only ONE painting)

Sepia, Black, Neutral Tint, or Payne's Gray (for ONE exercise, not one of the paintings

The book includes line drawings to use to trace for yourself, although I think it is worth mentioning that the author encourages people to learn to draw. The provided drawings I think provide a nice bridge for people with no drawing skills to help understand perspective and frankly, just to sometimes have fun and trace out a quick picture to get right to the painting -)
  • I give this 3 stars because it contains some ideas; otherwise, I would rate it 1 star. The step-by-step instructions involve sloppy painting that I'd think the author should be embarrassed by. The picture on the cover looks nice, but each and every painting inside is terrible.
