- The hacking series are my favourite edbooks and the newest instalment in the series lived up to my high expectations once again. If you are new and maybe a little scared of using digital learning in the classroom or use it whenever you can like I do, this book is for you. As I read each chapter my mind was flying in all different directions envisioning adding these activities in my classroom. From having students analyse and create game walkthroughs to creating digital badges and rewarding other students for their achievements, it is all there. The lessons in this book teach students digital citizenship in a way that will engage while taking their learning to a whole new level. The worst thing about reading this book is the realisation that my units last term could have been so much better if I had this book. Actually looking forward to planning for next term now. Thanks, Shelly and Mark, nailed it!!!!

Overall, I highly recommend this book to all of my teachers as a valuable, out of this world resource. - My only lament while reading this book was that I had to scroll through the PDF preview version on my laptop screen. I'm so glad that it's now available in print, and I've just placed my order. I also confess that I initially was not naturally attracted the the "Hacking" titles, mostly since that's not a word has any special meaning for me or that I feel particularly close to. I've never thought of myself as a hacker. I thankfully overcame that obstacle some time ago. I've been buying, reading, sharing with colleagues, and using the books in my classroom practice. I'm not a technology education teacher. I'm a high school Spanish teacher, and I'll be able to adapt and adopt something from each of the 10 chapters in this book. All schools should have a complete set of the Hack Learning series books in their professional development libraries, (or just buy them for all their teachers.)
- I love the Hack Learning series, and this newest addition does not disappoint! Written in a clear, accessible style, the ideas and missions are laid out in a pattern that will be familiar to fans of the series the chapters begin by identifying a problem, but instead of sharing a hack, the author sets up a mission for students to learn how to solve the problem. The missions are easy to understand, and will not push teachers beyond their level of comfort with technology.
This book has two huge selling points. First, it is chock full of ideas that can be quickly applied in any classroom with basic tech tools (and most of the missions also include a "tech-free" or "faux tech" option for those who may not have access or who have very young children). The ideas are not intimidating, even if you only have a basic grasp of ed tech tools, and many of the missions call for the use of platforms most teachers would be using already.
Second, it is so timely! The problems being addressed are problems that our students must learn to deal with (Internet trolls, fake news, creating a digital profile, etc). These missions are fun and creative, but they are grounded in really solid pedagogical approaches to help students not only learn basic tech skills, but also to extend those ideas and consider how their online interactions can have lasting repercussions. All of the missions end with discussion ideas and follow-up activities to help students make the connection between the school setting and their online lives.
The missions in this book can be applied to all content areas, and also cover the Digital Learning Competency standards many states are now requiring teachers to teach. Buy this book; you will not regret it! - As a member of the Hack Learning community, I was excited to get a chance to preview this book before it published. It's a quick read, and full of great information. It's got great hacks for technology in the classroom, and at the same time it gives you tips on how to teach your students digital responsibility.
This is going to be a go-to resource for so many teachers as they are getting into using digital learning strategies, and I imagine many will be able to look back at this book as what really changed their classroom towards embracing technology. You don't have to be a techie to be able to implement most of these strategies.
I look forward to adapting some of these into my mathematics classroom.
